Panatang Makabayan (Filipino Oath of Allegiance)
It is hard to imagine why our lawmakers are busy debating on how to change the constitution, the name of the streets, etc. etc. but lack the political will to battle the root cause and real problem why there is grinding poverty in our beloved country : Graft and Corruption? Yes! In Bold letter.
They may change everything, even our national hero Jose Rizal and put Manny Pacquiao instead legally, but the truth remains that the heart of the problem is the problem of the heart of our public leaders including us. I have heard a preaching one time in our church saying that sometimes, it is not what kind of system of government we have – socialism, communism, federalism, democratic, etc. – it is the change within that matters most. A change from without may work a little but we can not expect a drastic positive change of the economic situation of the common tao.
Let us therefore take into heart this New version of the Oath of Allegiance for the Filipinos:
Panatang Makabayan
(Revised or New Version)
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas,
aking lupang sinilangan,
tahanan ng aking lahi,
kinukupkop ako at tinutulungang
maging malakas, masipag at marangal.
Dahil mahal ko ang Pilipinas,
diringgin ko ang payo ng aking magulang,
susundin ko ang tuntunin ng paaralan,
tutuparin ko ang tungkulin
ng mamamayang makabayan:
naglilingkod, nag-aaral at nagdarasal
ng buong katapatan.
Iaalay ko ang aking buhay,
pangarap, pagsisikap
sa bansang Pilipinas.
Panatang Makabayan
(Classic or Old Version)
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas.
Ito ang aking lupang sinilangan.
Ito ang tahanan ng aking lahi.
Ako’y kanyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan,
upang maging malakas, maligaya at kapakipakinabang.
It is true that nothing is permanent on this Earth except change, but change will only mean nothing if there is no change in attitude.
