Babysitter arrested for having sex with minor.

A 28-year-old babysitter in Post Falls has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old boy she says she was in love with. After a seven-month investigation detectives found there were at least four sexual encounters that occurred between Summer Nelson and the young teen back in August of 2007. Nelson remains in custody in the Kootenai County Jail and is facing four counts of lewd conduct with a child. If convicted could face up to life in prison. –Kxly AM 920

Teacher jailed for sex with pupil

A married teacher who had sex with one of her teenage pupils has been jailed for four years and three months.

Elvira Fairhurst, from Liverpool, began an affair with the boy when he was 14 and had sex with him up to 10 times.

Judge Henry Globe QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, told Fairhurst she had abused her position.

“You allowed an unhealthy, unprofessional, unlawful sexual relationship to develop and pursued that relationship for your own pleasure in an open and brazen way,” he said.

“You performed sexual acts in semi-public, in a stockroom, in a boys’ toilet, in a park and finally at a time when you were performing public service as a juror in this very building, in an open-air car park in full view of a crane driver.”

—BBC news , June 2006

Ewe!! Very humiliating! As a woman, sometimes it’s hard to believe that there are people out there with such terrible acts. I don’t know but I am just wondering what was in their minds. In my own point of view, i guess they are suffering from psychosis ( abnormal condition of the mind ).Because there is no normal person who could ever do that filthy thing.

The Bible is clear on that, ” But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-
2 Timothy 3 :1 -4

In Revelation 22 :15 ” outside are the dogs ,those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practice falsehood.”

What is Lewd?

a. Preoccupied with sex and sexual desire; lustful.
b. Obscene; indecent.
c. treating sexual matters in a vulgar way

Law Encyclopedia: Lewdness
This entry contains information applicable to United States law only.

Behavior that is deemed morally impure or unacceptable in a sexual sense; open and public indecency tending to corrupt the morals of the community; gross or wanton indecency in sexual relations.

An important element of lewdness is openness. Lewdness is sometimes used interchangeably with licentiousness or lasciviousness, which both relate to debauchery and moral turpitude. It is a specific offense in certain state statutes and is included in general provisions in others.—–answers.com

Lewd Conduct

Lewd conduct is any unlawful act committed by an individual with the purpose of arousing the libido or sexual interest of themselves or the person towards which this action is directed. Lewd conduct criminal offences typically involve pornography, prostitution, or indecent exposure offenses. Lewd behavior, also called lewd and lascivious conduct, is considered a crime by the federal government and all fifty states, though the definition and consequences of lewd conduct can vary by jurisdiction.

The definition and penalties for lewd conduct crimes depends on the jurisdiction and the specific facts of the case. In general, lewd conduct is a significant criminal offense that can lead to serious legal ramifications. Lewd conduct that involves another adult can be a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the acts in question. Lewd conduct may be a charge that accompanies other criminal charges, such as assault, battery, or a sex offense. A person who exposes their genitalia in public (indecent exposure), one who participates in prostitution or pornography, or commits any other unlawful sex-related act may be charged with lewd conduct.

Lewd conduct that involves minors is considered a felony offense. When an adult engages in behavior involving a child that is intended to arouse the sexual libido of the aggressor or the child, the offender will most likely be charged with a felony crime of lewd conduct. When an individual is convicted of lewd conduct involving a child, they will face incarceration, fines, and other serious penalties.

Persons who are convicted of lewd conduct involving a minor must also register as a sex offender where they live, work, or otherwise reside. This information is intended to inform the public about sexual offenders and sexual predators in their communities. Sex offender registries are accessible to the general public, prospective and current employers, government agencies, educational institutions, and who ever else wishes to access this information.

People who are convicted of repeat offenses for lewd conduct will face even stricter punishments. One potential penalty for any lewd conduct offender is confinement to a mental hospital or compulsory psychological treatment programs. There are a variety of other severe penalties that an individual may face if charged with lewd conduct.

Until last month, first place in the overall vehicle sales rankings had been dominated by low-cost light cars such as the Suzuki Wagon R, and the Prius’ rise to the top spot was the first time a vehicle classified as a regular passenger car had done so since December 2007, when the Honda Fit claimed the title.

Second in the sales-by-model rankings was the Wagon R, with 16,185 sold, followed by the Daihatsu Move at 14,935, both light vehicles. The Honda Insight hybrid — which debuted in February — was well back in the pack at seventh place, with 8,782 of the cars leaving showrooms in June. However, while Honda’s hybrid was unable to stem the Prius’ momentum, it continues to exceed Honda’s sales target of 5,000 vehicles per month.

The Toyota Prius 2010 General Features
Toyota Prius 2010 has become a standard-bearer in its segment. Toyota Motor being one of the few car companies who manufactured gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle again hit the market with its third generation release of the Prius. It is now become so popular in the world because of its proven stellar fuel economy,
relatively uncompromised driving and acceleration characteristics and reasonable price.

The Toyota Prius (its name comes from Latin and means “to go before”) exists as a partial solution to the automobile’s problem of tailpipe emissions. The Prius, like other hybrid vehicles, has a special powertrain that combines a gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine with an electric motor. This powertrain, along with other advanced features, allows the Prius to deliver higher fuel economy and lower emissions compared to regular cars.

The Toyota Prius 2010 was completely redesigned though it’s still a four-door hatchback that seats five people. The car’s hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.8-liter gasoline engine that produces 98 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque that’s used in conjunction with two electric motors and a special planetary gearset that functions as a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Total system power is 134 hp.

Other changes for Prius 2010 model include a more sculpted take on the iconic hybrid shape established by its predecessor. The interior was given a more radical overhaul, with a more conventional center control stack than the old car. The hybrid system display now resides high up on the dash next to the digital speedometer, while stereo and climate controls are laid out in a traditional manner with physical buttons rather than a touchscreen (which reappears if you order the optional navigation system). The result is a car that’s easier to acclimate to. It’s also a bit more comfortable for taller drivers, thanks to a height-adjustable seat and a telescoping steering wheel.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the Prius’ superb interior packaging, which helps extends the car’s appeal beyond simple fuel efficiency. Its hatchback body style allows for an impressive amount of cargo to be lugged around, while a surprisingly commodious backseat makes it a plausible replacement for a family sedan or compact SUV.

In some reviews it was found the Toyota Prius 2010 to build upon its revolutionary predecessor’s successful formula of fuel efficiency and versatility. It’s now a more normal car to drive and use, making it easier to transition from a traditional car. While Honda’s less expensive but smaller Insight is worth a test-drive, those looking for a hybrid should still start their search with the Toyota Prius.

Though some are claiming that Toyota Prius 2010 is a complete redesign of the 1st and 2nd generation releases, it still sat five people in a four-door hatchback body that provided extra versatility in terms of carrying items. The previous models only featured a smaller, 1.5-liter gasoline engine that produced 76 horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque. With the electric motor spinning out power, peak net hp was 110.

Toyota Prius 2010 interior changes is considered to be one of the biggest area of difference between the second-generation model. The dashboard and controls were unconventional and futuristic, with stereo, climate, vehicle system and optional navigation controls residing in a touchscreen interface. There were steering wheel buttons for frequently used items, but ultimately, too much was put under the jurisdiction of the touchscreen. The odd gear-selector action of today’s Prius was carried over from this generation, but then it was mounted on the dash.

Other reviews of the Toyota Prius cited the outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, and hatchback utility. Ofcourse it remains cheap which is the car’s greatest strengths.

There are known downsides though. It includes soft handling characteristics at highway speeds and, compared to regular midsize sedans, unimpressive maximum acceleration.

Selecting older model of Prius based on year shouldn’t be too difficult because models built for 2002 and ‘03 might have more of a draw, as it was then that Toyota started to offer additional optional features, such as a navigation system, side airbags and cruise control.

Toyota Prius is now considered from a niche product to become Toyota’s third-best-selling model in the United States since 2003 where 2nd generation was made available in the U.S. market. It has 98% satisfaction rate which rare to happen in car industry.

Talking about Hybrid cars, aside from Prius, Toyota also has Camry Hybrid aside from Ford Fusion Hybrid.

The 2010 Toyota Prius was officially unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January 2009 and went on sale in April. This latest Prius release is bigger and more powerful. Also, the engine grew from 1.5 liters to 1.8 liters—giving a boost in horsepower from 110 to 160, and thereby reducing zero-to-60 time by a full second aside from the body is about four inches longer and about an inch wider but what is amazing is that becomes the only vehicle available today to offer 50 miles per gallon in combined city or highway driving.

Toyota Motor achieved this level of fuel efficiency by keeping Prius’ weight down but maintaining the best aerodynamics of any car being produced in the world, and re-engineering the powertrain to extend the range of all-electric gas-free driving.

The Toyota Prius 2010 Exterior Design

Toyota added a slightly sportier feel and more aggressive stance to the 2010 Prius—perhaps to disarm criticism that the Prius looks like a corrective appliance on wheels. The logo shifts from the hood to the top of the point of the grille. The crease in the doors has shifted lower, but a more pronounced angle is added above the door handles. The overall effect is to make the 2010 Prius stand taller—not as rounded and squat—as its predecessor.

The distinct space-age shape of the Prius is still apparent: a deliberate effort by Toyota to maintain the Prius’s essential and iconic appearance. Its large, diamond-cut headlamps and snub-nose front-end are the starting point for the Prius’s quasi-flying saucer appearance. The angled hood seamlessly flows into the windshield, then to a flowing roofline that is sleek and low. Short overhangs and a sawed-off rear section finish off the hybrid’s futuristic hatchback character.

Of course, beauty is subjective, so the Prius continues to receive mixed reviews on outward show. There are many who think the Prius looks gimmicky, if not entirely ugly. But for many hybrid owners, the distinctive look of the Prius sends a message, which declares that we must take steps to reduce our voracious thirst for oil—with all its negative consequences in terms of the environment and geo-politics. For this camp, the Prius is like a middle-finger-on-wheels aimed at Hummers, Suburbans, Escalades, and the like.

The Toyota Prius 2010 Bells and Whistles

The previous Prius had loads of gizmos—including keyless entry, joystick shifter, high-tech energy monitor, and a rear-view camera system. Toyota throws even more technology at the new model.

In this release, the Prius offers a moonroof and heated seats. The sliding glass moonroof, packaged with a slick-looking solar panel, provides power to a new ventilation system that doesn’t require help from the gas engine. Not only does the AC system keep the interior air temperature from heating up when the vehicle is parked, the system can be operated remotely to heat or cool the cabin before getting into the car.

Toyota Prius 2010 offers threa driving mode: Power, Economy and EV. Power improves throttle response; economy reduces throttle response for better gas mileage; and with a flip of the dashboard EV button, the car can go about one mile at low speeds without using any gasoline.

Toyota Prius 2010 also offers an optional radar system using advanced millimeter waves enables “Lane Keep Assist” to help the driver stay safely within the lane, and the “Pre-Collision System” retracts seatbelts and applies the brakes in certain conditions when a crash is unavoidable. Intelligent parking offers settings to help guide the Prius into parking spaces. A backup monitor, which provides a view of rear obstacles when reverse is engaged, is available with an optional voice-activated navigation system.

The Prius 2010 also has new touch sensor system on the steering wheel helps keep the driver’s eyes on the road. Images of the switches and their positions are shown on the instrument panel directly in front.

The Toyota Prius 2010 Interior Design

Toyota Prius 2010 or even prior release has been successful in its ability to combine great fuel efficiency and utter practicality. There will be five adults which can fit comfortably, with more than 16 cubic feet of cargo room left over in back. The 60/40 split rear seats also can be folded flat, creating a surprisingly large cargo space for hauling groceries, strollers, large boxes, etc.

Regardles of the height, drivers should comfortable driving Prius 2010. What is amazing is that, the back seat is roomy, beating the Toyota Camry by a few inches, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Honda Insight.

All are not positive anyway because the hatchback design limits the visibility through the rear window which drivers refer as the “Prius blind spot.”

Toyota Prius 2010 offers an astonishing 113 mpg, according to a report in the U.K.’s AutoExpress magazine. (Note: 113 mpg in the U.K. is equal to 94 mpg here in North America). “The whole electrical system has been redesigned to improve economy” said a Toyota engineer was quoted as saying. “We are working on a prototype that runs solely on the electric motor in slow traffic, but switches to engine and motor drive when higher speeds are needed.” The 0-62 mph time will also be improved by more than a second, according to the report, bringing it to well under 10 seconds. Much of the improvement can be attributed to the use of lithium-ion batteries instead of nickel-hydride units. The lithium-ion batteries are smaller, lighter, and have greater electrical output.

Anti-dynasty bill revived

A decision of a member of the longest-ruling political clan in the country to give up politics set off
a strong move in the House of Representatives for the swift enactment of bills aimed at dismantling political dynasties.

Opposition and administration lawmakers joined Nueva Ecija Rep. Edno Joson in his bid to give life to the anti-political dynasty provision of the Constitution by passing an enabling law to make it effective.

Makati City Rep. Teodoro Locsin Jr., chairman of the Committee on Electoral Reforms, vowed to push for the two anti-dynasty measures pending before his committee.

RP has secured its place in outsourcing space, according to top BPO players

The global financial crisis may have slightly slowed the growth of the local outsourcing sector, but the outlook and actual activities happening on the ground continue to be robust and upbeat.

This was the consensus of industry players who attended the recent “State of the BPO Industry: Mid-Year Report” conference organized by the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) in Makati City.

BPO industry collaborates with property developers

The business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has vowed to work with property developers to address the sector’s demand for office spaces, a move seen to be crucial to lower rentals.

Oscar Sanez, Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (PHILEXPORT) trustee for the information technology (IT) services sector, said the sector is establishing demand projections quarterly to determine the period when outsourcing firms could face a supply crunch or oversupply.

“In a situation where there is oversupply and not enough demand occurring, we could work with property developers to either defer their projects to the time that you can get optimal price or advance them if they can to meet some anticipated demand short-term,” he said.

Presidential Commission on Good Government Chairman Camilo Sabio has agreed to hold a board meeting this Wednesday upon an order of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to appoint Jesus M.
The military warned of more bombings in Central Mindanao, which it said was part of the “grand plan” of Moro rebels to sow “terror” and distract the military from its pursuit of rebel commanders.

The explosion near a church in Cotabato City on Sunday that left five people killed and scores others wounded was “connected” to explosions in Koronadal City and Datu Piang town in Maguindanao province, Armed Forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner Jr. said.

Citing a report from the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, which is based in the region, Brawner said the recent bombings were “test missions” of new recruits to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s urban squad.

THE Obama administration has signaled the strongest message yet that the United States is prepared to intervene to ensure free and clean elections in the Philippines next year.

Speaking to reporters at the US Embassy celebration of July 4th on Thursday, US Ambassador Kristie Kenney said “a postponement of the general elections next year will be a cause for concern in Washington.”

This was the bluntest expression of Washington’s concern over the holding of the May 2010 elections, which has created considerable doubts in the country in the face of mixed signals from the Arroyo administration. Kenney could not have been more emphatic.

There’s nothing to stop her except ‘delicadeza’

Fr. Joaquin Bernas, an expert on constitutional law and a member of the 1987 Constitutional Commission, said he would rather that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo did not run for Congress in 2010 as representative of the second district of Pampanga province.

“We never thought the President would be humble. If I were her, I would not seek a lower office,” Bernas said, when the issue of Ms Arroyo’s purported plan to run for Congress came up in a forum of the Council of the Laity of the Archdiocese of San Fernando here on Saturday.

Bernas, dean emeritus of the Ateneo College of Law and a Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist, said there were no legal obstacles to stop Ms Arroyo, who had previously served as vice president and a senator, should she decide to run for representative.

“Now, delicadeza ibang bagay yan (propriety is another matter),” Bernas told reporters.

Five people were killed and at least 30 injured after a bomb packed with nails and jagged iron blew up across the cathedral where Archbishop Orlando Quevedo was celebrating Mass in Cotabato City yesterday morning.

The fifth fatality, a man who was said to be mentally unstable, remained unidentified as of last night. Dangane said the man, who was blown to pieces by the blast, could have caused the bomb to explode prematurely after tinkering with it.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Jose Melo yesterday called on critics to heed the clamor of the people to allow the automation of the 2010 elections.

Melo said critics should help the Comelec ensure the success of the automation of next year’s elections, which will do away with a voting system that is often marred by fraud and violence.

“People are calling for automation already. There is a big, big majority of Filipinos that have been clamoring for automated elections. This is why we want to automate,” Melo said.

Melo noted some critics are still insisting on a manual counting of votes on fears that the new and yet untested method of electronic voting would open more opportunities of massive fraud.

The public is entitled to know the real state of the President’s health.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said yesterday that President Arroyo’s health is everybody’s concern and should not be kept secret from the public. “The public is entitled to know the health condition of the President.
Enrile said the Constitution requires the public disclosure of the President’s health and medical condition.

Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, president of the United Opposition, also said the law is clear on disclosure of the state of the President’s health. “The law does not give a President the discretion to choose what information about (her) health condition should be disclosed to the public and which should be kept secret,” Binay said.

In early 2007, Oklahoma had a civilian labor force of 1.7 million and total non-farm employment fluctuated around 1.6 million. The government sector provides the most jobs, with 326,000 in 2007, followed by the transportation and utilities sector, providing 285,000 jobs, and the sectors of education, business, and manufacturing, providing 191,000, 178,000, and 151,000 jobs, respectively. Among the state’s largest industries, the aerospace sector generates $11 billion annually.

Tulsa is home to the largest airline maintenance base in the world, which serves as the global maintenance and engineering headquarters for American Airlines. In total, aerospace accounts for more than 10 percent of Oklahoma’s industrial output, and it is one of the top 10 states in aerospace engine manufacturing.Due to its position in the center of the United States, Oklahoma is also among the top states for logistic centers, and a major contributor to weather-related research.

The state is the top manufacturer of tires in North America and contains one of the fastest-growing biotechnology industries in the nation. In 2005, international exports from Oklahoma’s manufacturing industry totaled $4.3 billion, accounting for 3.6 percent of its economic impact. Tire manufacturing, meat processing, oil and gas equipment manufacturing, and air conditioner manufacturing are the state’s largest manufacturing industries.

Agriculture

In terms of revenue generated Oklahoma’s top five agricultural products are cattle and calves, hogs, broilers (young chickens), wheat, and dairy products.

Livestock
Oklahoma is one of the leading #5 sources of beef in the country and is the leading source of agricultural income in the state. Other important livestock products are hogs (#8), broilers (young chickens), dairy products (milk), chicken eggs, sheep and lambs, turkeys and fish (farm-raised catfish).

Crops
Oklahoma’s most valuable crop is wheat and the state ranks among the leading (#4) producers in the country.
Greenhouse and nursery products rank second with hay, cotton, soybeans, corn for grain, pecans, grain sorghum, peanuts, watermelons, and rye following.
Peaches and oats are also grown in Oklahoma.

Manufacturing
Manufacturers add value to raw products by creating manufactured items. For example, cotton cloth becomes more valuable than a boll of cotton through manufacturing processes.
Production of machinery, particularly oil field machinery, leads the manufacturing industry in Oklahoma. Construction machinery, machine parts and refrigeration and heating equipment are other types of machinery manufactured in the state.
Transportation equipment (aircraft and aerospace equipment, automobile assembly) ranks as the second most important manufacturing activity in the state followed by a variety of other items including computer and electronic equipment (electronic components, military communication systems, telephone equipment), fabricated metal products (structural metal), processed foods (meat-packing plants, animal feed, bakery products), and rubber and plastic products (tires).

Mining
Oklahoma’s most important mined products are petroleum and natural gas. The state ranks among the leading producers in the country.
Other mined products are coal, crushed stone (limestone quarries), iodine and sand and gravel. Iodine is not produced in any other state.

Services
In the services industry, the community, business and personal services group leads the way with private health care, equipment rental companies (oil field equipment, rental cars), telemarketing firms (telephone reservation systems) and repair shops.
Ranking next are the wholesale trade (food products, grain, oil and gas, transportation equipment) and retail trade (automobile dealerships, discount stores, food stores, service stations) industries along with government services (public schools, hospitals, military bases).
The third most important service industry in Oklahoma is the finance, insurance and real estate group, fueled by costs associated with the transfer of property and increasing demand for office space.

History of Oklahoma Economy from 1950-2001

Primarily an agricultural state through the first half of the 20th century, Oklahoma has assumed a broader economic structure since the 1950s. Manufacturing heads the list of growth sectors, followed by wholesale and retail trade, services, finance, insurance, and real estate. Oil and gas extraction continues to play a major role. The oil industry boomed from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s.

In 1985, however, the boom ended. Prices dropped from $27 a barrel to $13 a barrel within a month in 1985. In 1998, gas and oil production was valued at only $3.4 billion; one-third of what it was worth in the mid-1980s. Oklahoma’s unemployment rate, which averaged about 3% in the early 1980s, jumped to 9% in 1983, and then fell to 7% in 1985, and rose again, to 8%, in 1986. Since then, the economy has undergone a slow but steady recovery. Unemployment was at 3.4% in 1999. Gains in manufacturing made up for the losses in mining. Manufacturing output, however, peaked in 1999, and by 2001 had fallen 9.2%. The state’s overall growth rate, which accelerated from 3.5% in 1998 to 3.9% in 1999 to 6.5% in 2000, fell back to 3.2% in the national recession and slowdown of 2001. The main growth sectors in terms of output coming into the 21st century (1997 to 2001) were general services (up 26.8%), government (up 24.2%), financial services (up 2.5%) and trade (up 21.3%). The impact of the national slowdown is expected to be mitigated by Oklahoma’s military installations (Fort Sill and Tinder Air Force Base are two of the state’s top five employers) in a time of rising defense spending, and by its oil and gas industry as prices reach new highs in 2003.

In 2001, Oklahoma’s gross state product gross state product was $93.9 billion, the 29th largest among the states, to which general services contributed $17.6 billion; government, $15.8 billion; trade, $15.4 billion; manufacturing, $13 billion; financial services, $11.9 billion; transportation and public utilities, $8.8 billion; and construction, $3.9 billion. The public sector in 2001 constituted 16.8% of gross state product, well above the 12% average for the states.

Manufacturing lost 16,000 jobs in May, according to commission reports. From May 2008 to May 2009, mining and logging jobs decreased more than 13 percent and manufacturing jobs dropped nearly 11 percent.

The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission said the unemployment rate increased to 6.3% in May.

That’s compared to 6.2% in April and 3.6% in May of 2008.

The Oklahoma rate is still lower than the national average which is 9.4%

Oklahoma’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 6.3 percent last month, well higher than this time last year, but much lower than the national rate.

The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission said Friday the unemployment rate in May 2008 was 3.6 percent. In April it was 6.2 percent. Last month’s national rate was 9.4 percent and many states topped 10 percent.

Over the last year, Oklahoma unemployment increased by 48,590 people.

The state has an overall labor force of nearly 1.8 million and more than 111,000 people are unemployed.—Associated press June 2009

This chase scene seemed to dominate network news tonite, with live helicopter pictures from a Dallas News chopper that even for a while it make Michael Jackson’s death coverage off of the screen.

The movie-like car chase gets Americans glued to the TV screen. It was specially a spectacular car chase scene minus stuntmen though unlike the similar incident in 2007, this one ended like so many do—with a horrific crash.

Like a car chase in a movie, this scene also include spike strips, jumping off ramps, and running down signs.

The car chase in Dallas started at 635 and Interstate 30 in different stretches of Interstate in the area. The desperate driver, Shane Michel, even making his way off-road for a portion of the chase, and very nearly struck several cars in the process.

However, the car chase ended when Michel ran a red light and was bumped by a pickup truck manned not by a police but by Lance Anderson, who did not sustain any serious injuries.

(TIM) with Smartmatic Corporation of Netherlands.

TIM’s pulling-out angered COMELEC Chairman Melo, who vowed not to let TIM go without any penalty. Melo said in an interview “We will do everything to sanction them. You are not supposed to join a bidding and then after you won, you withdraw. We are a constitutional body and we cannot be toyed around with.”

Chairman Melo added that TIM president Jose Antuñez came to his office yesterday afternoon to inform him that “they are withdrawing from the project, citing irreconcilable differences” with Smartmatic Corp.

“I told them that they were putting their personal interests above something that is of national importance,” Melo said with frustration seen in his face. But he said that although the likelihood of conducting the 2010 local and national polls manually is greater now, they are still not losing hope.

“We will study if it’s legally acceptable for the Comelec to tie up with Smartmatic in doing the automation.”

There is also the possibility that Comelec will reconsider the bids of the six disqualified bidders because under the bidding law, Smartmatic cannot replace TIM as its Filipino counterpart since they are the ones that have partnered during the bidding process.

Smartmatic officials were surprised of this development because they do not have any inkling of TIM’s withdrawal. Smartmatic are in the process of negotiating the automation contract with the Comelec’s Special Bids and Awards Committee (SBAC) when this happened.

“We worked very hard in the bid process, in the joint venture agreement and during the whole process. We received the notice of award together. We had a partner an hour ago. We were waiting for them to honor their commitment,” said Smartmatic International Sales Director Cesar Flores. He added that Smartmatic is still “prepared and committed to the automation of the 2010 elections.”

SBAC head Ferdinand Rafanan said TIM could be administratively liable under Rule 13 of Republic Act 9184 or the Government Procurement Act for the sudden withdrawal. Rafanan added that under the law, the Comelec could forfeit the P350-million performance security bond of TIM and ban the firm from joining any of its bidding process for one year.

Meanwhile Chairman Melo had given the consortium until Friday to submit their incorporation papers. He warned them that failure to submit the documents could lead to the cancellation of the automation contract, and they could face up to 15 years’ imprisonment under the procurement law.

With this development, some Senators particulary Senators Francis Escudero and Richard Gordon said they would likely look into the possible cancellation of the poll automation due to the decision of TIM to withdraw from the project.

They also called on the Comelec to explore other options under the law requiring automated polls to make sure the 2010 general elections would be clean, honest and credible.

Senator Chiz Escudero, co-chairman of the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Automated Election System, said he would wait “until we know the real reason behind the decision of the Comelec” before conducting an inquiry.

“I will show it to the people. I might call for a hearing,” Gordon, chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon committee, said.

“The (Comelec) has a mandate. This will open Pandora’s box if (poll automation does not push through). It will show that they really have no intention to push through with this and maybe some are following the administration’s plan to stop this,” Gordon added.

Both Sen. Chiz Escudero and Sen. Richard Gordon are possible candidates for President in the coming national elections.

There are rumors circulating in the past few days that some powerful and influential people who are against automation, are pressuring Comelec officials to not continue the project so that manual counting shall happen because it is the easiest way to manipulate the outcome.

Or just merely a persecution to American companies in South America? Citing unspecified dangers to health, Reuters published that the Venezuelan government on Wednesday ordered giant beverage Coca-Cola Co. to withdraw its Coke Zero.

The Venezuelan Health Department said that the zero-calorie beverage should no longer be sold and stocks of the popular beverage drink be removed from the storehouses. “The product should be withdrawn from circulation to preserve the health of Venezuelans,” Health Minister Jesus Mantilla added in comments reported by the government agency. Mantilla could not specify however what kind of health risks Coke-Zero brings.

A twist of this development however is undeniably obvious because Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is known to be a U.S. – critic, an anti-capitalist policies and rhetoric against consumerism. But despite all of these, Venezuela remains to be one of Latin America’s most Americanized cultures, with U.S. fast-food chains scattered all over the country including shopping malls, and baseball all highly popular.

Coke Zero’s market share for low calorie drinks is aimed to increase since it was launched in Venezuela in April and Coca-Cola Femsa, the Mexico-based company that bottles Coke products locally. Coca-cola and the bottler are yet to issue comment since Wednesday.

Coca-Cola bottler was plagued with labor problems since last year in this No. 1 U.S. oil supplier country in South America – Venezuela when former workers are steadfastly protesting and repeatedly blocked its plants while demanding back pay. Reuters also mentioned that the government this year has seized a rice mill and pasta factory belonging to U.S. food giant Cargill and has threatened action against U.S. drug company Pfizer.

Cymbopogon (lemongrass) is a genus of about 55 species of grasses, native to warm temperate and tropical regions of the Old World and Oceania. It is a tall perennial grass. It is popularly known as lemon grass, lemongrass, barbed wire grass, silky heads, citronella grass, fever grass or Hierba Luisa.

Lemon grass is native to India. It is widely used as a herb in Asian cuisine. It has a citrus flavor and can be dried and powdered, or used fresh.

Lemon grass is commonly used in teas, soups, and curries. It is also suitable for poultry, fish, and seafood. It is often used as a tea in African and Latin American countries (e.g., Togo, Mexico, DR Congo).

Research also shows that lemon grass oil has anti-fungal properties.

Citronella Grass (Cymbopogon nardus and Cymbopogon winterianus) is similar to the species above but grows to 2 m and has red base stems. These species are used for the production of citronella oil, which is used in soaps, as a insect repellent in insect sprays and candles, and also in aromatherapy, which is famous in Bintan, Indonesia. The principal chemical constituents of citronella, geraniol and citronellol, are antiseptics, hence their use in household disinfectants and soaps. Besides oil production, citronella grass is also used for culinary purposes, in tea and as a flavoring.

Lemon Grass Oil, used as a pesticide and preservative, is put on the ancient manuscripts found in India in Oriental Research Institute Mysore . The lemon grass oil also injects natural fluidity into the brittle palm leaves and the hydrophobic nature of the oil keeps the manuscripts dry so that the text is not lost to decay due to humidity.

An article written by Allison Kaplan Sommer says that Benny Zabidov, an Israeli agriculturalist who grows greenhouses full of lush spices on a pastoral farm in Kfar Yedidya in the Sharon region, couldn’t understand why so many cancer patients from around the country were showing up on his doorstep asking for fresh lemon grass. These unexpected visitors were told to drink eight glasses of hot water with fresh lemongrass steeped in it on the days that they went for their radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

It all began when researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev discovered last year that the lemon aroma in herbs like lemon grass kills cancer cells in vitro, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.

The research team was led by Dr. Rivka Ofir and Prof. Yakov Weinstein, incumbent of the Albert Katz Chair in Cell-Differentiation and Malignant Diseases, from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at BGU.

Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma and taste in several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), Melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis.)

According to the study found that citral causes cancer cells to ’commit suicide: using apoptosis, a mechanism called programmed cell death.’

A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral toprompt the cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube. The BGU investigators checked the influence of the citral on cancerous cells by adding them to both cancerous cells and normal cells that were grown in a petri dish. The quantity added in the concentrate was equivalent to the amount contained in a cup of regular tea using one gram of lemon herbs in hot water. While the citral killed the cancerous cells, the normal cells remained unharmed.

The findings were published in the scientific journal Planta Medica, which highlights research on alternative and herbal remedies. Shortly afterwards, the discovery was featured in the popular Israeli press. Why does it work? Nobody knows for certain, but the BGU scientists have a theory.

In each cell in our body, there is a genetic program which causes programmed cell death. When something goes wrong, the cells divide with no control and become cancer cells. In normal cells, when the cell discovers that the control system is not operating correctly – for example, when it recognizes that a cell contains faulty genetic material following cell division it triggers cell death,’ explains Weinstein. This research may explain the medical benefit of these herbs. The success of their research led them to the conclusion that herbs containing citral may be consumed as a preventative measure against certain cancerous cells.

As they learned of the BGU findings in the press, many physicians in Israel began to believe that while the research certainly needed to be explored further, in the meantime it would be advisable for their patients, who were looking for any possible tool to fight their condition, to try to harness the cancer-destroying properties of citral. That’s why Zabidov’s farm – the only major grower of fresh lemon grass in Israel – has become a pilgrimage destination for these patients. Luckily, they found themselves in sympathetic hands. Zabidov greets visitors with a large kettle of aromatic lemon grass tea, a plate of cookies, and a supportive attitude.

How to grow Lemon Grass?

The father inlucidng his wife’s sister of Zabidov were died of cancer. ‘So I understand what they are dealing with. And I may not know anything about medicine, but I’m a good listener. And so they tell me about their expensive painful treatments and what they’ve been through. I would never tell them to stop being treated, but it’s great that they are exploring alternatives and drinking the lemon grass tea as well’ Zabidov testifies.

Zabidov knew from a young age that agriculture was his calling. At age 14, he enrolled in the Kfar Hayarok Agricultural high school. After his army service, he joined an idealistic group which headed south, in the Arava desert region, to found a new moshav (agricultural settlement) called Tsofar.

One time while Wandering in the Paris market, looking at the variety of herbs and spices, Zabidov realized that there was a great export potential in this niche. He then brought samples back home with him, which was technically illegal, to see how they would grow in his desert greenhouses. And soon enough, they were growing basil, oregano, tarragon, chives, sage, marjoram and melissa, and mint just to name a few.

It came to a point where this kind of business began to outgrow his desert facilities, and decided to move north, settling in the moshav of Kfar Yedidya, an hour and a half north of Tel Aviv. As of this writing he is now selling ’several hundred kilos’ of lemon grass per week, and has signed with a distributor to package and put it in health food stores.

Being open minded person, Zabidov has taken it upon himself to learn more about the properties of citral, and help his customers learn more, and has invited medical experts to his farm to give lectures about how the citral works and why.

The responsibility to know what to tell his customers about it is another concern for Zabidov. He then called and called Dr. Weinstein at Ben-Gurion University , because these people were asking him exactly the best way to consume the citral. The doctor responded by saying ‘put the loose grass in hot water, and drink about eight glasses each day.’

It’s a pleasing experience for Zabidov by the findings, not simply because it means more business for his farm, but because it’s more of might influence there own health especially that they have a history of cancer illnesses . In fact before the news of its benefits were demonstrated, he and his family had been drinking lemon grass in hot water for years, just because it tastes good.

“There is pressure from the executive committee of Bangon Pilpinas party for us to make a public answer to that question because the Bangon Pilipinas Party has been receiving many questions along that line. So the decision could be made public by Sunday, October 5,” said Villanueva, who was in the House of Representatives this afternoon to receive a congressional commendation for JIL.
